Ludonarrative Dissidents

Overview

"Ludonarrative dissonance" is a term from game-design commentary, describing a moment when the game mechanics pull in one direction but the game story pulls in another, creating dissonance. The ‘Ludonarrative Dissidents’ are three game designers, reviewers and commentators, veterans in the field of ludic narrative, who have come together to discuss the art, science and craft of RPG design by vivisecting game systems and seeing what makes them run.  Your hosts are Ross Payton, Greg Stolze and James Wallis.

Ethos

Every episode of Ludonarrative Dissidents is built around four pillars: What does this game do? How does it do that? How do people play it? Why do they play it that way? (and how well does it succeed?) We examine games from all angles: mechanical, ludic, narrativist, historical, cultural, structural, whether or not it’s fun, and Greg complains about its use of the future-conditional tense. We look at its influences and pedigree, its narrative engine, its world-building, its book-design, and James reveals that he dated the designer’s sister, or something like that. In season 2 we have added episodes that look at specific aspects of RPGs, such as initiative systems, metacurrencies and diceless games.

Origins

The idea behind Ludonarrative Dissidents came from a Twitter discussion in early 2021. Someone was looking for RPG designers to work on a project, someone else suggested Greg and James, and after the two of them politely declined, a third person opined that a podcast with the two talking about games and game design would be quite a thing. Greg and James exchanged a virtual glance across the Atlantic, Greg mentioned the idea to Ross, the three of them filled a Google document with ideas, and the project was born.

Syrinscape is a revolutionary sound design application created by Benjamin Loomes and the team at Syrinscape Pty Ltd. Unlike simple music players, it uses a sophisticated algorithmic engine to create dynamic, non repeating soundscapes that react to the events of a tabletop game. It is the official audio partner for major brands like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and Call of Cthulhu, offering hundreds of professionally produced "SoundSets" that provide everything from cinematic orchestral scores to specific monster growls and spell effects. Description Syrinscape is built on the philosophy that "Epic Games Need Epic Sound." It provides Game Masters with a powerful digital soundboard where every element of an environment is independently controlled. Instead of playing a single audio loop, the app randomly triggers individual sounds—like a distant wolf howl, a creaking door, or a tavern patron’s laugh—to create a living, breathing atmosphere. It is available as a downloadable app for offline play or as a high performance Web Player for remote sessions. System Overview & Key Features The Dynamic Audio Engine The core of Syrinscape is its ability to randomize sound samples in time and 3D space. This ensures that a "forest" soundscape never sounds exactly the same twice, preventing the listener fatigue that often comes from short, repetitive audio loops found in standard music players. One Shot Sound Effects Beyond ambient music, the app features dedicated buttons for instant sound effects. A GM can trigger a fireball explosion, a dragon screech, or a critical hit stinger at the exact moment a player rolls the dice, adding a cinematic punctuation to the narrative. Official Adventure SoundSets Syrinscape produces bespoke audio for official RPG modules. When running a major campaign like Curse of Strahd or Abomination Vaults, GMs can access SoundSets designed specifically for every room and encounter in the book, including character voices and unique environmental cues. The Web Player and Online Player For remote play, the Web Player allows players to hear the GM's audio in perfect sync through their own browsers without needing an account. It is highly optimized for low latency and high quality, making it a perfect companion for Discord based games. SoundSet Creator Advanced users with a SuperSyrin subscription can access the SoundSet Creator tool. This allows you to upload your own music and samples, mix them with existing Syrinscape elements, and build completely custom environments tailored to your specific campaign world. VTT Integration Syrinscape features deep integration with platforms like Fantasy Grounds and Foundry VTT. This allows the software to trigger specific sounds automatically based on in game events, such as a character taking damage or a trap being sprung. Blades in the Dark (2017)

English
Heist
Blades in the Dark is a heist-themed tabletop roleplaying game system about a crew of daring misfits  on the streets of an industrial fantasy city. Published by Evil Hat Productions in 2017 and designed by John Harper, it introduced the highly influential Forged in the Dark rules engine. BitD revolutionized the heist genre in tabletop gaming by pushing players straight into the act, eliminating the "planning phase". The system it loosely evolved from is Apocalypse World Description In Blades in the Dark, players are part of a criminal organization in Doskvol, a grim Victorian era city. The city is protected by a wall of lightning, to keep any threat on the outside. Players create their characters as either smugglers, thieves, assassins or cultists and explore the criminal underworld, perform dangerous heists, manage gang warfare and grow their criminal organization. The game focuses heavily on narrative momentum and failing forward. Characters are competent but flawed, constantly accumulating stress, trauma, and heat from the law as their gang rises to power. System Overview & Key Features Action Roll (d6 Dice Pool) The core mechanic uses a pool of six-sided dice(d6) based on a character's action rating. The highest die result will determine the outcome of the action. 6 is considered a full success, 4-5 is a partial success with a consequence, and 1-3 is a failure. Rolling multiple full successes is considered a critical success. Position and Effect Before every roll, the Game Master explicitly states the character's Position (Controlled, Risky, or Desperate) and Effect (Limited, Standard, or Great). This transparently communicates the exact stakes and potential fallout of the action before the dice hit the table. Stress and Resistance Characters have a Stress track. Players can spend Stress to give themselves for extra dice when rolling. They can also use it to assist an ally, or fuel their special abilities. Players can also spend Stress when facing any situation or consequence the GM throws at them, this makes the characters very skilled, but forces them to consider when to spend it. The Flashback Mechanic Instead of spending hours planning a heist, the crew simply chooses a target, picks a detail, and jumps right into the action. Later, they can use Stress, to envoke a flashback moment, where they explain how they had already planned for such a situation, or had "solved" it beforehand. Progress Clocks The game uses circular progress tracks called Clocks to visually represent approaching danger or the progress of a complex task. A clock might represent the alert level of the city watch, the structural integrity of a safe vault, or the patience of a rival gang leader. The Crew as a Character The criminal organization the players run has its own character sheet. The organization gains experience, levels up, claims territory, and unlocks special abilities, ensuring that the gang's rise to power is just as mechanically significant as the characters' Additional links evilhat.com - Official Evil Hat Productions website bladesinthedark.com - Official System Reference Document and rules database
